After making a stop at Scottsdale’s Ice Den, I decided it may be the perfect opportunity to try out an afternoon lunch at a place I have been hearing so much about, as well a stop for a fill up on my trusty Prius. Now gas station food is not my normal choice for a culinary experience. However, Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market is no ordinary gas station, and certainly does not offer typical gas station fare. The location offers a custom car wash, unique gift shopping experience showcasing Arizona souvenirs, wine, a locally roasted coffee and specialty pastry country, and Tom’s Thumb BBQ & Grill. In fact this gem was featured as one of Guy Fieri of TV’s Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives fame choices in Arizona.
The unique restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is known for their barbecue and tasty sides. But while barbecue options such as brisket, pulled pork, and chicken highlight their menu; there are far more abundant options on their creative and unique menu.
You can stop in for an out of the ordinary breakfast sandwich for the morning commute, or if time allows, leisurely enjoy Tom’s homemade pancakes or waffles made with their signature 100 plus year old starter.
Lunch offerings all you would expect from a hearty home style barbecue, but light eaters and vegetarians alike will be pleased and surprised at their tasty and beautiful salad presentations, as well as a Portobello Mushroom Sandwich.
Looking around at the quaint surroundings, and multiple diners enjoying their lunch fare, I was hard pressed to make the ideal choice. I finally decided on a half sandwich and soup combination that would prove to be the right decision. Tasty layers of thick cut brisket were nestled between Texas toast, with just the right amount of pickles to give it a bit of tangy deliciousness. At Tom’s you are not limited to a certain style of barbecue sauce. You are welcome to try an assortment at the side bar to dress your sandwich to your liking. I chose their hickory barbecue sauce, which was not too sweet, and had just the right amount of smokiness. For the soup, I picked their Texas smoked meat chili, flavorful and delicious, but not too spicy. You also have the option to add a topping of local cotija cheese and pico de gallo to personalize the dish to your liking.
For those of you that are looking for something extraordinary, be sure to try Tom’s Brisket Stack, featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. This delectable dish is layer after layer of goodness, starting with crispy hand-made hash brown cheese cakes drizzled with chipotle aioli sauce, topped with sliced brisket and finished with a fried over easy egg. Available in a half stack or full stack this choice will definitely not disappoint.
You can try out the delicious and unique offerings Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market has yourself, it is located right next to the Scottsdale Ice Den at 9393 East Bell Road in Scottsdale, Arizona.
